Baldridge Prize
Yesterday, Phi Alpha Theta the History Honor Society hosted the Annual Regional Conference at the UH-Manoa campus. BYU-Hawaii historians participated fully. Recent graduate Jason Poulter won the best undergraduate history paper for his study on the Samoan Tangle and Imperialism in the late 19th Century as reported by newspapers in San Francisco. The BYUH Archives has a collection of the San Francisco Gazette which had a correspondent in the Friendly Isles. Professor Isaiah Walker delivered the keynote address, introducing his new book - Waves of Resistance: Surfing and History in Twentieth-Century Hawaii. It's available for purchase at the UH Press website and soon will be sold everywhere. Finally, Jim served as lead judge for the Baldridge Prize, given to the best history book written by a resident of the state of Hawaii. The BYU-Hawaii History Department funds the prize every three years in honor of the beloved emeritus professor, Kenneth W. Baldridge. The 2011 Baldridge Prize for books published in 2008, 2009 and 2010 was given to Vina A Lanzona for her book - Amazons of the Huk Rebellion: Gender, Sex and Revolution, published by the University of Wisconsin Press. Professor Lanzona teaches at the University of Hawaii - Manoa. Kongrats. Mabuhay!
