Beanie Brownies

For a protein rich lunch at the Honolulu Zoo tomorrow, we made Beth's famous beanie brownies. Peanut Butter sandwiches worsen Monty's allergies, so Beth came up with a delicious alternative. Just add a can of refried beans to a recipe of brownies. Enjoy!

Go Seasiders

The BYU-Hawaii Men's Basketball team won the NCAA Division II Semi-Final game. They beat the #1 ranked team West Liberty University to advance to the Final Game on Saturday. We'll be watching it in Laie.

Two of the student-athletes are in my History 201 class. Another is in my History 322 class. One of our favorite players is Mustafa al-Akkari (#30). He is from Lebanon.

March Madness

We have been watching basketball all week. We all created our own brackets for Family Home Evening activity. Mom got creative this year and did hers alphabetically. We are all excited that BYU has won so far and that BYU Hawaii made it to the Elite Eight of Division II.

Art Club

Olivia likes to have Art Club on days with no school. This time was their painting day.

Even Monty and Grace joined in!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Pi Day

On the 14th day of the 3rd month we like to celebrate Pi Day. So Grace and her friends made a pie...

And ate it at 1:59.

Sunday at Laie Point

While Beth chatted with her sisters on-line today, some of us went up to Laie point - a beautiful day with cool breezes and clear, blue skies.

Macbeth

Isabel's fifth grade put on a production of Macbeth. Isabel performed as one of the witches and as Malcolm. The play was exciting and easy to follow. The liquid nitrogen, donated by a Chemistry professor at BYU-Hawaii, caught everyone's attention with the smoking cauldron. Double, double toil and trouble.

Baldridge Prize

Yesterday, Phi Alpha Theta the History Honor Society hosted the Annual Regional Conference at the UH-Manoa campus. BYU-Hawaii historians participated fully. Recent graduate Jason Poulter won the best undergraduate history paper for his study on the Samoan Tangle and Imperialism in the late 19th Century as reported by newspapers in San Francisco. The BYUH Archives has a collection of the San Francisco Gazette which had a correspondent in the Friendly Isles. Professor Isaiah Walker delivered the keynote address, introducing his new book - Waves of Resistance: Surfing and History in Twentieth-Century Hawaii. It's available for purchase at the UH Press website and soon will be sold everywhere. Finally, Jim served as lead judge for the Baldridge Prize, given to the best history book written by a resident of the state of Hawaii. The BYU-Hawaii History Department funds the prize every three years in honor of the beloved emeritus professor, Kenneth W. Baldridge. The 2011 Baldridge Prize for books published in 2008, 2009 and 2010 was given to Vina A Lanzona for her book - Amazons of the Huk Rebellion: Gender, Sex and Revolution, published by the University of Wisconsin Press. Professor Lanzona teaches at the University of Hawaii - Manoa. Kongrats. Mabuhay!

FHE Dessert

Olivia and Isabel combined their assignments for Family Home Evening tonight. Isabel had the Family History Moment and Olivia had the treat. Beth took them shopping and they bought rainbow sherbet and buttermilk. Beth assured them combined the two became one of Grandma Jean's memorable desserts. They were skeptical, but Josie remembered having had it long ago. Here's the result.

Olivia liked the rainbow sherbet without buttermilk. Isabel loved the sour, salty, sweet and fruity mix.

Monty had his own Lychee sorbet with a colored ice cream cone.

Report back if you read the blog and went to the store to buy your own sherbet with buttermilk treat.

Secret Spy

Today, Monty found out how to use his toy periscope over the backyard fence.

He was worried about his picture being taken because he was being an undercover spy. We managed to get some anyway.
